Nesbit Cottage

Residential
February 2018

Two extensions on different levels totally transform a small and badly laid out cottage, giving bright and attractive spaces.

More Information

First Impressions

A small cottage with a tiny kitchen, no link to its garden, hemmed in by outbuildings and with no room to breathe.

Objectives

Clear away all the additions at the back and side of the cottage and replace them with a simple, large extension, retaining views to the hills from the living room.

A bright and deceptively spacious house that takes full advantage of the sloping site and the original cottage design.

Result

A bright and deceptively spacious house that takes full advantage of the sloping site and the original cottage design.

Architectural Drama

A narrow staircase leads down from the front door to a small original rear door. Through this door, the surprise when you enter the kitchen is a dramatic moment.

We enlarged the original rear window to the living room to give views down into the new kitchen and through a rooflight to the sky beyond.

The garden level was raised to give easy access and views from the kitchen.

Transforming and Respecting the Original Building

The original extension and outbuildings were all tiny and poorly built. We stripped these away to expose the original building

We extended the original main roof line and covering down to enclose the new extension, giving a simple building form that looks like it was intended all along. The original cottage wall was left exposed.

New rooms in the extension are bright and spacious, rather than the dark and cramped original extensions.

Characterful Details

The roof waterproofing was very robust, so we could use roof tiles which grow moss and plants, embedding the house into its wooded surroundings.

Bedrooms in the new extension have pitched ceilings and oak beams

The oak scissor trusses and timber/aluminium windows give a sensitive and modern character to the kitchen.
