Overley Hall School

June 2018

A sensitively designed extension to a residential school for children with a range of complex needs. The new build is inspired by the existing building and its woodland setting, and provides a Family room for several children, together with ancillary accommodation and much needed office space.

More Information

First Impressions

A school in a fantastic old building, needing modern spaces to provide a proper home for their children, and some nice offices for the staff.

Objectives

Design an extension which sits well with the existing building and which contains bright and welcoming spaces for the children and staff.

Spaces which the children think are fantastic, in a beautiful building that complements its surroundings perfectly.

Design Sensitive to the Original Building

The extension materials and details match the existing building, with decorative tile hanging, carved stonework and matching brickwork.

The extension sits lightly against the original walls, with original building stonework and brickwork restored during construction.

The extension is single storey, so we added a tall gable to give character to the family room internally and respond to the original building externally.

A Child Focused Environment

The L-shaped family room has three distinct zones, with a rooflit activity space to the centre.

The rear of the building looks onto a secure play space, with timber cladding for a softer impression.

The children have already begun to inhabit the space.

A Woodland Setting

The extension sits closely to woodland to two sides of the building.

A quiet seating area in the family room looks directly into the woods.
